You are here: > Replicas and Models

Acorn Naturalists' extensive collection of quality replicas and models includes animal track, scat, skull, talon, claw, tooth, fur, feather, egg, fish and leaf replicas, as well as realistic models of insects, fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals.

  Why Replicas from Acorn Naturalists?

Naturalists occasionally come across skeletons in the field, and it is not unusual to find bones and other natural curiosities on a naturalist’s shelf or in a local nature center. This is in contrast to actively purchasing real animal skins and skulls, a practice that creates a market for removing these animals from the wild. This is particularly problematic when key predators such as bobcats, coyotes, badgers, fishers, martens and weasels are decimated for their pelts, skulls or claws. All of these key predators are still actively trapped in the wild.

For the past quarter century Acorn Naturalists has been an active proponent of the use of replicas in education. Replicas offer strength and durability, and do not have special storage, handling, or the chain-of-custody permit requirements of real skins and skulls. Best of all, no animals are extirpated in the process.

In this section you will find Acorn Naturalists own trademark Kindfur®, ScatCast®, and Feather® replicas, along with an extensive selection of skull, track, talon, claw, egg, fish, leaf, life cycle and animal models.

We appreciate your continued support of the replica concept. Ordering your replicas from us allows us to continue developing new replicas and supporting the community of local artisans that craft these resources.

  Acorn Naturalists Animal Replica Packs®
These comprehensive replica packs allow for in-depth study of 10 common North American mammals. Each pack includes the skull replica cast, flexible track replicas, flexible track molds (for making casts), a ScatCast® replica, Trace-A-Skull template, articulating Skull Model®, Nature Circles® Track/Scat Card Set, Nature Circles® Skulls Card Set, DuraGuide to Animal Skulls and Bones, DuraGuide to Animal Tracking and the Pocket Naturalist Guide to Animal Tracks. All of these carefully selected resources come in a reusable storage box. For ages 10-adult.

  Animal Signatures® Displays
Just as we learn to identify the handwriting of others, we can learn to read signatures left by wildlife. By recognizing animal clues, it is possible to determine which animals are in the area. This unique set of 6" x 8" glass-topped displays provides real examples of these clues, or signatures. Samples are carefully collected-for example, our squirrel cones are collected after squirrels have chewed them. Scat replicas are cast from field samples, worm castings from gardens, frass from where caterpillars have been feeding, and insect chewed leaves are collected and pressed. Ages 9-adult. $24.90 each. MIX OR MATCH 10, $22.41 each.

  Model Collections
These high quality, realistic models are perfect for hands-on learning. Included here are invertebrates, insects, fish, amphibians, reptiles, marine and terrestrial mammals and complete sets within each category.

  Fish Skull Replicas

Fish Printing Replicas, Inks, Paper and Kits
Fish printing, or Gyotaku, incorporates science (fish diversity, anatomy, ecology), art (create colorful paintings, note cards, displays), math (measure and count fins, proportions, count fin rays), reading (use with stories about aquatic environments) and creative writing (write fact or fiction about the fish prints). All ages and abilities can enjoy creating beautiful, unique, artistic prints. We offer a wide selection of both fresh and saltwater species.

Spread them out on a table and have students organize, classify, and study key identifying features. These high resolution, two-sided feather images are printed on waterproof "paper" that is derived from minerals, not trees (thus no bleaching chemicals are used in the manufacture of these unique replicas). If needed, the feather replicas can be cleaned in warm soapy water. A total of 63 different bird North American bird species are represented. $29.90 per set.   Kind Fur® Replicas (swatches)
Replica fur (Kind Fur®) is an ideal resource for educators. Designed primarily to give children the look and feel of animal fur, these replicas go well with storytelling and discovery table activities. We need to emphasize, however, that these replicas are not study skins (they lack eye holes, ears, noses, paws and tails). On the other hand, unlike real fur, these replicas do not have special storage or treatment requirements. They also do not require knowledge of complex and ever-changing regulations regarding State of Origin fur tags, permits, transfers, and associated necessary record keeping.

Most importantly, Kind Fur® does not require trapping animals better left alive in the wild. Regarding these replicas, it is important to note that in nature there is tremendous variation in fur color, even on a single specimen, let alone among the same species in different locations or seasons. These replicas are close in appearance (and feel) to animal furs, but won't match perfectly with any given real fur. Also, as can be the case with skull replicas, high-quality faux fur can sometimes cost more than real fur.

While realistic in appearance, replica fur can always be identified by looking at the backing—replica fur have cloth fabric backing, as opposed to tanned animal hide. Twenty-five years ago, Acorn Naturalists made a concerted effort to encourage people to embrace the skull replica concept to reduce demand for real skulls. Acorn Naturalists is now pioneering the concept of replacing real fur with replica fur, or Kind Fur®.

You can download a complete description of all of the Kind Fur® replicas we offer by clicking here.
