Acorn Naturalists Philosophy Regarding Replica Use
Naturalists often come across bone fragments, egg shells, or even entire skeletons in the field, and it is not unusual to find these interesting artifacts on a naturalist’s shelf or in an education center. However, for educators, interpreters and naturalists who want to build a focused teaching collection, we feel that replicas offer a better solution than natural bone products due to their strength, permanence and lack of special storage requirements. Replicas also allow students to gain firsthand knowledge of protected species. Most important, use of replicas reduces the demand for real skeletons, many of which still come from killing animals in hunting and trapping operations, sometimes under the guise of questionable and archaic varmint control programs or in the case of rattlesnake skins, totally unnecessary and environmentally unsound "rattlesnake roundups." Also, we do not sell animal skins for similar reasons. For decades, we have supported the craftsmen who prepare these replicas and we are confident that they will serve your educational needs while reducing pressure on animal populations.

Bird Egg Replicas, References, Magnets
Each of these ceramic egg replicas is handcrafted to resemble eggs as they would be found in nature. Since they are hand created one at a time, there is some variation, just as in eggs from different regions or even within the same clutch. These accurate replicas are used by museums in their displays to avoid having real eggs damaged or subjected to fading from lights. These eggs are also perfect for the classroom, nature center, or home display. All eggs come with an attractive clear acrylic display cylinder. For additional data on the bird egg replicas we offer simply click here. In addition to the egg replicas listed here, we can also provide many other types of replicas. Please click here for a complete listing of over 600 skulls and other replicas that we can easily provide you with. Also in this section are activity and reference books as well as bird egg magnets.

Track Replicas - Positives (actual casts)
These life-size animal track replicas are individually cast using flexible vinyl. Use for sand tracking games (glue replicas to blocks of wood using vinyl glue and stamp tracks into sand boxes) or bring into the field to compare tracks or make prints. These accurate casts from museum specimens show every skin fold, claw or scale. These are wonderful hands-on tools for teaching anatomy, adaptations, behavior, ecology or tracking skills. Use TSP (available at any hardware store) to clean occasionally. Frog, turtle and mammal replicas are offered in sets featuring one back and one front foot unless noted as ea, in which case only one foot is included (all birds, some mammals).

Track Molds (for making track impressions)
Made from flexible vinyl polymers, these molds can be filled with plaster, clay or PerfectCast, the compound used by museum professionals (available from Acorn Naturalists). Use the track casts you make as instructional aids, pressing them into moist sand or dirt to create a story (such as coyote tracks chasing rabbit tracks), for ink prints, or to compare with field specimens. Everyone can have fun making tracks—students or campers can take them home or make displays. Clean with TSP (available at hardware stores) or other soapy cleansers or detergents. Each mold also features the name of the track and hind (H) or front (F) paw reversed out so that it appears correctly on the positive. Each of the species listed below includes a hind and a front track mold (set), unless designated as ea (birds, some mammals). For additional information on using these replicas, simply click here.
