Resource Description
BIODIVERSITY 911 VIDEO EDUCATION KIT. World Wildlife Fund. Provides audiences of all ages with an introduction to the importance of biodiversity, threats to biodiversity and the ways people can help. In the 12-minute video, viewers will meet six hospital emergency room patients that have been affected by one of the more serious threats to biodiversity. Students meet a clump of soil suffering from erosion and nutrient depletion, a beluga whale tainted by toxins, a tulip poplar felled to make way for development, a rhino traumatized by recent encounters with poachers, and two shrimp injured in a fishing net. They’ll also hear about a piece of coral bleached by rising sea temperatures associated with global climate change. Viewers meet two emergency room doctors who are caring for these and other patients. Through the patients’ stories and the doctors’ diagnoses, viewers will become acquainted with some of the causes of the biodiversity crisis, such as overfishing, suburban sprawl, and wildlife trade. They’ll also explore trends toward reversing biodiversity loss through making more responsible decisions and wiser consumer choices. The accompanying Educator’s Guide provides introductory information about the topics addressed in the video, as well as ideas for developing in-depth investigations of biological diversity. Kit includes video and guide. #EE-11300.
