Resource Description
COMPARISON OF HARDWOODS AND SOFTWOODS. Visual demonstration of why some woods are called hardwoods and others softwoods. A hardwood section (usually locust or oak) and a softwood section (usually pine) are shown with illustrations of their cellular differences. In hardwoods, the late wood grows slowly, with the cells close together, thus forming a larger band of "hard wood." In softwoods, the early wood growth is fast, with cells full of water, thus spread apart into a relatively large band of softwood. This botanical display measures 16" x 12". #T-12809.
