| KIWI EGG REPLICA. The Kiwi, of the order Apterygiformes-Ratitae, occurs only in New Zealand's native forests, scrub and native grasslands. A semi-nocturnal, secretive bird, few have seen their national bird in the wild. Kiwis are the sole survivor of an ancient order of birds including the now extinct moas. A flightless bird about the size of a domestic fowl, the kiwi has coarse, bristly, hair-like feathers. Females are larger than males. Kiwis grow to about the size of a chicken and weigh between three and nine pounds. have no tail and tiny two inch wings which for all practical purposes, are useless. This ceramic egg replica is individually molded and hand-painted by a California artisan to resemble the egg as it would be found in nature. Since they are created one at a time, there is some variation among the eggs, just as in eggs from different regions or even within the same clutch of a single species. All external measurements are precise - these replicas are regularly used by museums in their displays (to avoid having real eggs damaged or subjected to fading from light). Perfect hands-on resource for classrooms, nature centers, museum displays or home egg collections. All eggs come with a clear acrylic display cylinder sized to fit the egg. The ruler shows egg length in inches. #EGG-14045.
