Additional information: (quoted from the label on the back of the display)

"The shells in the top right section of this display bear the telltale sign of a carnivorous predatory marine snail that bored into a clam’s shell with its sharp, awl-like radula. The rock on the left side of this display has holes carved out by boring clams that drill by rotating the file-like ridges on their shells. The clams stay encased in the rock for their entire lives, filtering food from the water through their siphons. Along the bottom of the display are shells bearing the marks of a sponge that bores small attachment holes into shells. Securely attached, the sponge then feeds on plankton carried by the currents."">

Resource Description
MARINE INVERTEBRATE SIGNATURE DISPLAY (Animal Signatures® Clue Display). Acorn Naturalists. Just as we learn to identify the handwriting of others, we can learn to read signatures left by wildlife. This unique 6” x 8” glass-topped display provides real examples of these animal clues from wild areas and even parks and school grounds. With this display, students learn that some "signatures" can be found washed up on the beach. Some examples are old clam shells with the drill hole marks of predatory marine snails, shells with scattered holes from sponges that were attached to them, or pebbles with holes formed by clams that had drilled through solid rock. All samples have been hand collected. Ages 9–adult. #T-22050.
