| NYJER THISTLE SEED SOCK-STYLE FEEDER (empty sock). These durable goldfinch sock feeders are ready to be filled with nyjer seed (also known as "thistle") and are completely reusable - simply open the sock and fill when nyjer seed is depleted. Shown above is one of these socks filled with nyjer seed and looped around the base of our tube-style goldfinch nyjer feeders. At our Center for Science and Environmental Education we have found that this combination provides maximum attraction and versatility for finches, allowing for more birds to feed at the same time. We have two tube feeders with a sock at the bottom of each and we have seen over 100 goldfinches at a time on and in the redwood trees surrounding those feeders. You can also place socks in different locations around the yard or balcony - finches simply pull the seed through these mesh bird feeders as they feed.
