| Resource Description
|
| RED OAK TREE ROUND (Eastern Hardwood). This species is often found in dry hills at moderate altitudes, forming an important food chain and shelter base for wildlife species. This high quality tree branch cross section (disc or tree cookie) is perfect for studying seasonal tree rings to calculate the age of a tree or limb, identify tree anatomy (heartwood, sapwood, cambium and inner/outer bark layers), study different growth patterns (tree ring irregularities, evidence of branching) and variation in growth patterns and climatic variations over time. Each cross section is fine sanded on one side to assist in reading tree rings. Since there is variation among all of the rounds, looking at several specimens of each species provides for an optimal learning experience. Individual disc size ranges from 2” to 4” across by 1/4” to 3/8” thick. #T-6365.
