Resource Description
PACK RAT CHEW AND SCAT SIGNATURE DISPLAY (Animal Signatures® Clue Display). Acorn Naturalists. Just as we learn to identify the handwriting of others, we can learn to read signatures left by wildlife. This unique 6” x 8” glass-topped display provides real examples of these animal clues from wild areas and even parks and school grounds. With this display, students learn that these distinctive cut and chew marks on yucca and opuntia (prickly pear) cactus, along with scat, indicate foraging by wood rats. Samples have been hand collected; scat replicas are cast from field samples. Ages 9–adult. #T-22039.

Mix or match any 10 Animal Signatures® Displays to receive 10% off!

Additional information: (quoted from the label on the back of the display)

"These desert yucca leaves have been chewed by woodrats (packrats) that nip them off to secure water and nutrients in dry environments. Woodrats also arrange the leaves in their nests, along with twigs, cactus pads, and shiny objects. In addition, woodrats are known to nibble on cactus. The prickly pear cactus pads in this display show classic chew marks on the softer growing tip. Packrat scat is small and oblong and larger than mouse scat. Their nests consist of twigs and bramble piled several feet high."
