Resource Description
SQUIRREL CHEW CONE AND BRACT SIGNATURE DISPLAY (Animal Signatures® Clue Display). Acorn Naturalists. Just as we learn to identify the handwriting of others, we can learn to read signatures left by wildlife. This unique 6” x 8” glass-topped display provides real examples of these animal clues from wild areas and even parks and school grounds. With this display, students learn that the presence of fresh squirrel chew cones, scales, and seeds beneath pine trees indicates active squirrel feeding. All samples have been hand collected; squirrel cones are collected after the squirrels have removed the seeds and tossed the cone aside. Ages 9–adult. #T-22038.

Mix or match any 10 Animal Signatures® Displays to receive 10% off!

Additional information: (quoted from the label on the back of the display)

"A squirrel eats a pinecone like corn on the cob, spinning it round and round with scales flying off while it looks for the seeds tucked in at the base of each scale. With muscular jaws, a squirrel can chop through hard mature cones as well as the closed immature cones. Squirrels toss the woody-tasting scales to the ground and crack open the nutritious seeds, then repeat the process, slowly chiseling all the way up the pinecone. Keep an eye on the ground for discarded cones and an ear to the trees for the sounds of chewing."
