Activities focus on using tree rings to calculate the age of a tree or limb, determining climatic change and adaptation (through changing growth ring patterns), identifying tree anatomy (heartwood, sapwood, cambium and inner/outer bark layers) and finding fire scars or unusual growth patterns. Includes reproducible student observation cards for analyzing individual tree rings; 30 high quality, kiln-dried tree rounds (5 each of white pine, red pine, eastern black walnut, ash, red oak and basswood); 30 dual-power (3x/6x) magnifiers, a tree field guide with color plates, and instruction booklet with information, activities, and blackline masters.
