Introduction (from the activity booklet that comes with this kit):

Majestic and iconic, the monarch is one of nature’s most beautiful insects. While bold colors are present in all phases of its life, its regal chrysalis appears to be ringed with gold, much like the crown of a king, or monarch. Beyond its beauty, the monarch is also one tough animal. With the approach of winter, it migrates to warmer reaches. Those in western states travel to the central California coast. Those in southern Canada and central and eastern states travel to the mountains of central Mexico. Either route would be strenuous for any animal, let alone a butterfly. In early spring, the migrants begin their return trip back north. Along the way they find water, milkweed leaves, and nectar-rich blossoms. The eggs they deposit on the leaves of milkweed will soon become hungry caterpillars. After changing to pupae and later emerging as adults who mate and lay eggs, monarchs complete their life cycle. Their life is defined by milkweed and by seasonal cues that trigger both their movement and reproduction. Kit contents : monarch life cycle puppet, monarch life cycle models, rubber stamp, book about monarchs, set of blackline masters, classroom set of cotter pins and copper wire, and a monarch activity guide. The activities in this kit address the Next Generation Science Standards, specifically 1-LS1, 3-LS1, 4-LS1: From Molecules to Organisms: Structures and Processes.
