Bird Feather Signature Display (Animal Signatures® Display Series)
Bird Feather Signature Display (Animal Signatures® Display Series)
Just as we learn to identify the handwriting of others, we can learn to read “signatures” left behind by wildlife. By recognizing these animal clues, it is possible to conclude which animals are in the area. This unique, glass-topped display provides real examples of these clues, or signatures. Each sample is collected with careful regard to environmental impact, and assembled by Acorn Naturalists. With this display, discover how to tell molted feathers from feathers found at a bird predation site. The feathers provided are naturally molted, hand-collected feathers from domestic poultry. Information about the samples shown is provided on the back, making this display perfect for educators. Our signature displays are recommended for ages 8 to adult.

Quoted from the label on the back of the display:
"This display contains naturally molted barnyard feathers from a mixture of chicken, guinea hen, duck and turkey. Examples include primary flight feathers (the longest ones that aid in lift and thrust), secondary flight feathers (which are smaller than primary flight feathers), and feathers with down near the base which keeps the bird warm. On the right is a mass of feathers that indicate a kill (simulated by naturally molted feathers glued together and touched up with a red marker to illustrate what it might look like in the field)."
