Introduction (from the activity booklet that comes with this kit):
Owls are found throughout the world, including the tropics. Like hawks and eagles, they are birds of prey that hunt, kill, and eat animals. Unlike hawks and eagles, however, most owls are nocturnal. As the Sun sets, they awaken and begin their nightime prowl. The United States and Canada are home to 19 species of owls, ranging in size from the small elf owl to the massive snowy owl. Owls are not blind in daylight, nor can they see in complete darkenss. Although they have excellent vision in dim light, they rely more on their exceptional hearing. Using only their ears, they can catch prey in complete darkness. Their feathers are equally remarkable. Comb-like ridges and soft fringes muffle the sound of the wing stroke, enabling owls to fly on silent wings and hunt with stealth. Kit contents : barn owl plush, a book about owls, great horned owl track replica, barn owl talon replica, barn owl model, three pellets, forceps, bone sorting chart, Forests stickers, blackline masters, set of fasteners, and an owl activity guide.
