Marine Invertebrate Signature Display (Animal Signatures® Display Series)

Just as we learn to identify the handwriting of others, we can learn to read “signatures” left behind by wildlife. By recognizing these animal clues, it is possible to conclude which animals are in the area. This unique, glass-topped display provides real examples of these clues, or signatures. Each sample is collected from the wild with careful regard to environmental impact, and assembled by Acorn Naturalists. With this display, discover shells with the drill hole marks of predatory marine snails, shells with scattered holes from sponges that were attached to them, or pebbles with holes formed by clams that had drilled through solid rock. The marine signatures are most often found on beach walks. Information about the samples shown is provided on the back, making this display perfect for educators. Our signature displays are recommended for ages 8 to adult.

Dimensions: 6" L x 8" W x ¾" D

Quoted from the label on the back of the display:

"The shells in the top right section of this display bear the telltale sign of a carnivorous predatory marine snail that bored into a clam’s shell with its sharp, awl-like radula. The rock on the left side of this display has holes carved out by boring clams that drill by rotating the file-like ridges on their shells. The clams stay encased in the rock for their entire lives, filtering food from the water through their siphons. Along the bottom of the display are shells bearing the marks of a sponge that bores small attachment holes into shells. Securely attached, the sponge then feeds on plankton carried by the currents."
