Skate Fish Printing Replica

This flexible skate replica (9 inch) features one side of the fish; the reverse is flat. To make a fish print, simply ink the fish and roll on paper to “capture” the species as a print. When finished, replicas can be easily cleaned with soapy water. Fish printing, the Japanese art of Gyotaku, is an excellent way to combine science and art! We also offer a variety of washable block inks, ink rollers, and rice paper to enhance your fish printing activities.

Skate are members of the ray family and inhabit shallow to deep bottom waters throughout the world and can reach a length of six feet. Their empty egg cases often wash up on beaches – their shape earning them the nickname of mermaid’s purse. Skates are opportunistic feeders, consuming both live and dead fish, crustaceans and mollusks. In certain countries they are consumed for food, although they are not fished commercially in North American waters.
