Hardwoods and Softwoods Display

This 16” x 12” glass-topped display case helps visualize why some woods are called hardwoods and others softwoods. A hardwood section (usually locust or oak) and a softwood section (usually pine) are shown with illustrations of their cellular differences. In hardwoods, wood grows slowly, with the cells close together, thus forming a band of "hard wood." In softwoods, the spring growth is more rapid, thus cells are larger with thinner walls, forming "soft wood".
