Insect Emergence Signature Display (Animal Signatures® Display Series)

Just as we learn to identify the handwriting of others, we can learn to read “signatures” left behind by wildlife. By recognizing these animal clues, it is possible to conclude which animals are in the area. This unique, glass-topped display provides real examples of these clues, or signatures. Each sample is collected from the wild with careful regard to environmental impact, and assembled by Acorn Naturalists. With this display, discover how although you may not catch the emergence of insects as pupae chew their way out of their food source, you may find telltale holes and empty cocoons. Information about the samples shown is provided on the back, making this display perfect for educators. Our signature displays are recommended for ages 8 to adult.

Quoted from the label on the back of the display:

"Seed pods are often colonized by insects as a way of providing food for larvae. Upon maturing, adult insects gnaw their way out of the pod, leaving the small exit holes shown. Weevils often colonize acorns in the fall, laying one egg that hatches and grows inside the acorn, feeding on the nourishing seed fat and protein. When mature, they chew their way out of the acorn—you can see their exit holes in the acorns in this display. Cocoons are another insect clue, such as the hatched silkworm cocoon in this display."
