Mammal Tuft Signature Display (Animal Signatures® Display Series)

Just as we learn to identify the handwriting of others, we can learn to read “signatures” left behind by wildlife. By recognizing these animal clues, it is possible to conclude which animals are in the area. This unique, glass-topped display provides real examples of these clues, or signatures. Each sample is collected from the wild with careful regard to environmental impact, and assembled by Acorn Naturalists. With this display, discover how cocklebur seeds in fur, or fur tufts on branches or wooden posts may indicate predation. Wool, cockleburs, twigs, and sticks simulate these clues. Information about the samples shown is provided on the back, making this display perfect for educators. Our signature displays are recommended for ages 8 to adult.

Dimensions: 6" L x 8" W x ¾" D

Quoted from the label on the back of the display:

"Mammals often leave behind signatures in the form of fur tufts. If you encounter animal fur in the wild, you can sometimes tell which species it came from and sometimes why it is there. The “fur” in this display is unprocessed wool that has been assembled to replicate various fur scenarios. Occasionally, fur snags on branches or fence posts. Fur may catch burs or other seeds that the animal chews off due to the irritation, leaving clues such the cocklebur example in this display. Matted fur without seeds can indicate predation, such as the example in the lower right corner."
