#KIT-20149

Introduction (from the activity booklet that comes with this kit):

Bright, brazen, and very vocal, the coyote is North America’s most successful large predator. In the last century, it has extended its range to include the entire continental United States, plus most of Central America and portions of Canada and Alaska. It goes by several names—trickster, God’s dog, burrowing dog, and brush wolf. But unlike its relatives, the dog and wolf, a coyote is extremely vocal. A wolf howls occasionally, while a coyote howls, barks, and yips on a daily basis. Even in suburbs, we can hear its “call of the wild.” A coyote pack is composed of family members: the dominant alpha pair, their pups, and beta coyotes (younger sibling adults). While coyotes patrol a pack’s home range, they actively defend their core area, especially during mating season and “denning” season. In the core area, a pack finds the best food resources, denning sites, and protection from predators. It is believed that the coyote mates for life. Pup-rearing is a shared responsibility among the entire pack. The alpha female cares for the pups directly, while the alpha male and other pack members care for her. Kit contents : large puppet; coyote rubber stamp; coyote book; track and mandible replicas; coyote model; coyote sticker sheet; blackline masters; set of brad fasteners; and a coyote activity guide.
